Levert/Casanova, ©2008, 6.5 x 5 x 2 inches (closed), copper, brass, record from the street, mechanical parts, found broken mirror, acrylic paint, Prismacolor pencils, book covers, fabricated, wire edge binding. The cover is an old record I found on the street. I used a little epoxy for things like the numbers. Things are mostly held together with rivets and nuts and bolts. My blog entry has details about the wire edged binding. Not for sale. (It's way too fragile) Scroll down for more views. Every once in awhile I go crazy and make something I plan to never show. It can be really funky, poorly made and does not have to look like my other work. It's for fun and to try out things. It's to take a break from the "normal" routine. I do show these oddball books during Open Stuidios, and have taken them to the Book Arts Jam. But promising myself no one will ever see it frees me up to experiment in all kinds of ways. This is my entry for 2008. Levert/Casanova was inspired by a record I found on the street. It was badly scratched, a real treasure. I started thinking about music and sound, how important it is. And because this record would never be heard again, I thought about unheard sounds - the sound of the earth spinning and flying through space. Does the moon sound different? What about the stars?

Pages 1 and 2. The inside pages are old book covers. The one above came from a friend, at least one other came from an old, falling apart dictionary. That's a sewing ruler on the right, part of a small radio (AIWA), miscellaneous stuff. Everything has at least a glaze of acrylic paint. I added color in areas with Prismacolor pencils. And in the end I splattered lots of paint around.

Pages 7 and 8. Mostly collage here, but the bee is a pressed tin pin from Anima Designs. I hammered it some to flatten it. Then I sanded it lightly and painted it to give it a patina of age.
