News, Events, Etc:

October 23, 2015 - We are still in Portland, searching for a house. I have only minimal studio space and most of my tools are in storage. Work progresses slowly but I hope to get back to it. I finished one new book this year.

Memory Cam, handmade pinhole camera that takes photos of memories by Judith HoffmanOctober 2014 - Oneiro, 7 Extinction Events and Dinosaur Wave will be in the Bay Area Book Artists exhibit at the Menlo Park Library. This show is curated by Nanette Wylde. Her goal is to have as diverse a collection of books as possible. Should be an interesting show.

new studio in PortlandAugust 2014 - We are renting in Portland, Oregon, for a year. The idea is to try it out and see if we can endure the rumored bad weather. So far it's been hot, not cold or rainy. I'm sure we will get that, soon enough. I brought a small portion of my studio, much of it is in storage for the year. Soon I hope to be set up and back at work on a new camera project. I have been taking some through-the-viewfinder photos while we walk around. This part of Portland is very inspiring. Here is a link to the ttv photos on flickr.

Memory Cam, handmade pinhole camera that takes photos of memories by Judith HoffmanJune 25 to August 18, 2013 - My handmade pinhole cameras, including Memory Cam (to the right) and part of my old snapshot camera collection will be on display in the visitor center at Filoli. At the same time, two photos taken with the pinhole cameras will be shown in the photography exhibit, Hidden Beauty. There will be two "Meet the Artist" days July 20 and 21, (10 am to 3 pm Sat., 11 am to 3 pm Sun.) There is an admission charge, which admits you to the grounds of Filoli: Adults $15, Seniors $12 (65 years and older), Students $5 (college students, please present current I.D.) You could make a day of it, it's a beautiful place.
May 4 and 5, 2013 - (update - Open Studios is over, but you can see a few photos here.) Studio 19 will be open from 11 to 5 for Silicon Valley Open Studios. The large-sounding Studio 19 is really my work and my husband Jim's Zymoglyphic Museum. The strange and mysterious museum was the subject of my Zymo 127 photos. We both allow photography. Here's a sneak preview of a book that isn't on my web site yet:

my O.K. brass and copper accordion fold atist's book by Judith HoffmanPhoto to left - my O.K., 2013, about 4 inches high. Accordion fold book made of brass and copper. Parts left over from my other projects are riveted onto the oxidized brass pages. Come by and check it out. You can pick up the books and turn pages, ask questions and see my messy studio.
January 12, 2013 - I just finished a big two year project. It consists of a pinhole camera I made to take photos in my husband's project, the Zymoglyphic Museum, 24 pinhole photos and a unique artist's book, Spirits Under Glass, that holds the photos. And now the brass tripod that will display the camera is done. There is a blog post here and a flickr set here, which has photos showing how the camera was made.
Zymo 127 pinhole camera and Spirits Under Glass, artist's book that holds the photos from Zymo 127
Above: the Zymo 127 project. Just to be clear, I made the pinhole camera, took the photos, made the artist's book and tripod. Jim's project is the Zymoglyphic Museum, he made the dioramas in the museum, which I thought would be fantastic subjects for pinhole photography..
June 1, 2012 - One of my books is on the cover of the Japanese version of 1000 Artist's Books! (Oneiro, top right) Pretty amazing! It never occurred to me that they could change the cover, although now that I think about it, all of Terry Pratchett's books have different covers between the US and UK. Maybe accordion-fold books are big in Japan? The top left book is in a real accordion, it's by Peter and Donna Thomas. Two other books of mine are in this book: Dinosaur Wave and zero to twelve. I am delighted! Check out the Amazon link - there are a lot of pages in the "look inside." It is a great book - very inspiring.
7 Extinction Events - artist's book by Judith Hoffman, copper, plastic dinosaur, watercolor paperApril 28, 2012 - Two views of my book, 7 Extinction Events are included in Humor in Craft from Schiffer, by Brigitte Martin. This is a great book, full of amazing work in a huge variety of media. It's big - 12 x 9 inches and the printing looks great. There are no how-to instructions, this is a book to keep on your nightstand or coffee table and leaf through, maybe right before you go to sleep, so you have strange and wonderful dreams.

You are the star of my heart, copper and sterling silver locket necklace by Judith HoffmanApril 3, 2012 - Photos of Spectacles for a Fish Goddess and You are the star of my heart (front and back views) are included in the Gallery section of Heat, Color, Set and Fire: Surface Effects for Metal Jewelry by Mary Hettmansperger, published by Lark Crafts. pp. 12 & 51. This book has some interesting techniques I want to try out.
Zymo 127 Mermaid - photo from Zymo 127 pinhole camera, by Judith HoffmanFebruary 3, 2012 - The Zymoglyphic Mermaid pinhole photo, taken with my handmade Zymo 127 pinhole camera, will be in the Statewide Photography Competition and Exhibition at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, CA. The show is up from February 18 to April 22, 2012. The artist's reception will be on February 24, 7 to 9 pm. You can see more photos in this series here.
